Eastern University, Sri Lanka, originated from the Batticaloa University College established on August 1, 1981, with two faculties: Science and Agriculture, both affiliated with the University of Peradeniya. In 1988, the Faculty of Commerce & Management and the Faculty of Cultural Studies were added, with the latter expanding in 1991 to include the Departments of Languages and Social Science, becoming the Faculty of Arts & Culture. Currently, Eastern University is a National Centre of Excellence for Higher Education and Research in the Eastern Province, aiming to enhance its functions, increase student intake, and expand undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs. It focuses on producing innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial graduates with essential competencies and social skills, promoting interdisciplinary research, and contributing significantly to regional and national development in alignment with its Vision and Mission.
