The University of Kelaniya traces its origins to the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, established in 1875 as a learning center for Buddhist monks. Situated just outside Colombo's municipal limits in Kelaniya, it features two major institutions and seven faculties. Unique departments at Kelaniya, later adopted by other Sri Lankan universities, include Industrial Management and Microbiology in the Faculty of Science; Linguistics, Fine Arts, Modern Languages, and Hindi in the Faculty of Humanities; and Mass Communication and Library and Information Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
